Our local history collection comprises books, documents, photographs, maps, newspapers, and yearbooks. We focus on collecting and making available those items that are of historical, legal, fiscal, and administrative value to the East Orange Public Library, the City of East Orange, the County of Essex, and the State of New Jersey.

Our city directories are useful when searching for family history. Our microfilmed newspapers provide a look into the city’s past. Our departmental annual reports give a glimpse of the city’s governance through the years.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE REGARDING OUR MICROFILM COLLECTION:

In order to preserve our microfilm collection and to provide better searchability, rolls of the East Orange Citizen, East Orange Courier, East Orange Gazette, and East Orange Record have been sent out to be digitized. This process will take approximately four (4) months to complete.

If you wish to search a roll that is not currently available, please return at the end of the summer to view our new digitized version!

Thank you for your patience.
