East Orange Fire Department

Dorothy Walton Gatley

The East Orange Fire Department was first established in 1878 by 25 volunteers. The name of that group was the Ashland Hook and Ladder Company. The installation of water mains and fire hydrants allowed the establishment of the Ashland Hose Company. These two companies were accepted by the Township Committee and given official standing in June 1883. Today the city has five engine companies, two ladder companies, one rescue squad, and one deputy chief vehicle, all well managed by approximately 138 personnel.
