Clara Maass (1876–1901)

Elmwood Branch

Clara Maass, nurse and volunteer, was born on Elmwood Ave., near Bedford St. After her training as a nurse at the Newark German Hospital nursing school, Maass rose through the ranks and became head nurse. When war broke out between the US and Spain, Maass joined the army as a contract nurse. She served from 1898 - 1900. Maass’ dedication to her profession and to helping others prompted her to travel to Cuba to help find a cure for yellow fever. During her 1st exposure to infected mosquitoes, Maass was bitten and recovered, but she was not able to recover a 2nd time.
